Featuring one of Rod Steiger's last appearances, this sweet 2001 film follows a dying baseball announcer, Charley McCabe (Steiger), who sets out on a quest to find the son (Michael Pare) who disappeared following a mysterious tragedy. In fragile health and subject to delusions, the old man sneaks off against the wishes of his other son (Al Sapienza) while accompanied by his doting grandchildren (Corina Marie, Jeffrey Tott). Several misadventures and various guest stars (including Sally Struthers, Jamie Farr, Sally Kirkland) later, the full meaning of Charley's effort to heal his broken family is revealed. Co-starring Dee Wallace-Stone as Charley's daughter-in-law, A Month of Sundays is driven by strong performances and raw emotion, and is ultimately quite moving once all the elements fall into place. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
