Peggy Sue Got Married receives a gay makeover in this low-budget, low-laugh comedy from director Marc Moody. Brad Jenkins (Andrew Keitch), a gay single man about to turn 40, confides to his best friend Julie that he always wanted to be normal. Not surprising really, since Keitch looks a bit strange—but that's the aging makeup: not unlike Kathleen Turner as Peggy Sue, Keitch's character manages to go back in time to high school (where he looks much more real). But this go-round, the high school is in an alternate universe where homosexuality is considered normal and heterosexuals are deviant. Our hero is thrilled that he finally has a chance to score with the hot jock whom he was afraid to approach years ago, but things go awry when he encounters Julie and begins to feel heterosexual urges towards her—thus keeping him from becoming normal yet again. This is basically a one-joke comedy, and while the cast tries gamely (Keitch is effective as the perpetually agitated protagonist and Joan Laukner is equally impressive as Julie), the film ultimately becomes tiresome as its preachy message falls like an anvil. Not recommended. (P. Hall)
