Just like every other bad genius criminal vs. brooding cop thriller you've ever seen, Along Came a Spider features the respectable Morgan Freeman reprising his role as Dr. Alex Cross from 1997's Kiss the Girls. Here, Cross is up against a psycho who kidnaps a senator's daughter in a ridiculously convoluted plan to also kidnap the son of the president of Russia (who inexplicably goes to a private elementary school in Washington, D.C.!). Directed by Lee Tamahori, who apparently ignores loopholes and beats clichés to death for a living (see The Edge, Mulholland Falls), the film co-stars a badly miscast Monica Potter (Head Over Heels) as a 29-year-old blonde cutie-pie Secret Service agent. Talk about zero credibility. Not recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
