An amusing but forgettable, aren't-men-adorable-dimwits? satire from Ireland, American Women (released theatrically under the title The Closer You Get) is about the paunchy, pasty, ruddy and lonely lads of a craggy coastal hamlet who concoct an inept plan to import sexy U.S. girls for courting. Of course, it's a foregone conclusion that none show up and the men will pair off with local lassies in the end. First-time director Aileen Ritchie offers up a respectable number of laughs but few stimulating characters, as these nondescript small town folks (sad sack sheep farmer, virgin plumber) mostly sit around the pub with their hands in their laps. Optional. (R. Blackwelder)[DVD Review—Feb. 21, 2006—Fox, 92 min., PG-13, $14.98—Making its first appearance on DVD, 2000's American Women features both widescreen and full screen versions, a solid transfer and Dolby Digital surround sound, but no DVD extras. Bottom line: while it's nice to have both widescreen and full screen versions on the same disc, the film itself is only a so-so comedy.]
