It would be easier to praise Julie Davis's Amy's O it didn't appear right on the heels of the vastly superior Kissing Jessica Stein, another film focusing on an almost thirty Jewish heroine searching for romantic love in all the wrong places. While Jessica Stein explored her inner lesbian, Davis's self-help guru Amy turns to a macho-yet-sensitive shock jock played by Nick Chinlund. Written, directed, produced, and starring Davis, this Sundance favorite is obviously indebted to Sex in the City, only here Amy seems to be Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha rolled into one, an über-woman character that is more surface gloss than flesh and blood. Although Amy's kvetching constantly references her religion and Ivy League background, spirituality and intelligence are precisely the dimensions missing from this hit-and-miss effort, in which appealing performers (Davis and Chinlund) can't quite compensate for the film's weak script. Not the big "O" by any means, this little "o" is an optional purchase. (D. Fienberg)
