Based on the novel by Tomás Rivera, this episodic film about a young Mexican-American boy named Marcos (Jose Alcalá) and his migrant farm worker family's travails during the 1950's is uneven. Although it captures (painfully, often eloquently) the injustice of American exploitation, and also contains some bitingly funny and wise scenes, the story--told in a series of flashbacks as Marcos hides under his house--is too fragmented (with uneven acting) to hold general viewers' interest. However, this is a strong optional purchase--particularly for libraries with extensive holdings in Chicano history and culture. (R.
