Originally released in 1982, Karoly Makk's Another Way explores the escalating oppression in Hungary after the failed revolt of 1956. At a newspaper in Budapest, two women journalists (Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieslak and Grazyna Szapolowska) fall in love, despite the strict mores enforced by the Soviet government. While the film seethes with grim sexual and political tension, the love story tends to be irritating, as the women deal with their conflicting feelings in an immature fashion that doesn't quite fit with their supposed intelligence. Yet, Another Way is worth seeing for its downright depressing portrait of intolerance. (L. Russo)
