This year's Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film, writer/director Marleen Gorris's sprawling saga of the lives and loves of a Dutch matriarch's natural and adopted family from WWII to the present has many fine moments. It also is way too consciously quirky, and has a bad habit of telling rather than showing--viewers don't "see" the character's growth, they're merely informed). Still, recommended due to the interest generated by the Oscar. (R. Pitman)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
