Senegalese vocalist Baaba Maal is arguably the most recognized African musician in the United States and Europe. With his band Daande Lenol (Voice of the People), Maal has toured extensively in western Europe and, during 1999, headlined Africa Fete '99, an African music festival that performed in many U.S. cities. Recorded in London at the Royal Festival Hall, this concert video faithfully captures the dynamism that Maal and his bandmates bring to their live performances. Maal's sound, a compelling melding of traditional Senegalese music, elements of Afro-jazz, and modern pop music--usually termed Afro-pop by music critics--is one of the most vital and refreshing vibes in world music today, and a great deal more intricate, stylish and bold than what passes for pop music in the U.S. Some long-form music videos can quickly become fairly static visual experiences, but the combination of Maal's music, the dancing that is such a big part of his concerts, and the adroit filming and editing, make this video anything but inert. Add to that the DVD's excellent audio quality and this is the next best thing to being in the mosh pit. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (P. Van Vleck)
