Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston makes her auspicious directorial debut with this emotionally-wrenching and superbly-acted film based on Dorothy Allison's acclaimed book about a young girl's horrific coming-of-age in 1950's South Carolina. Jena Malone makes an astonishing screen debut as Bone, whose close-knit family, including her mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh), cannot protect her from her abusive stepfather (Ron Eldard). It is a harrowing film, so disturbing that although his cable network commissioned the film, Ted Turner refused to broadcast it. But don't let its graphic content sway you from this moving story of courage and indomitable spirit. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
