Made in 1988, Baton Rouge follows a gigolo (Antonio Banderas) and a psychiatrist (Victoria Abril), who plan to murder a rich woman (Carmen Maura) and steal her money. Doublecrosses and dead bodies add up while the plot steadily thickens. Abril is convincing as the femme fatale and Banderas plays a decent love machine, though he's far sexier in Desperado. Writer/director Rafael Moleon's modern noir is effective, though it doesn't compare to other films of the genre such as Body Heat, The Underneath, or Red Rock West. Optional. (L. Russo)
