Bionicle 2, the sequel to Bionicle: Mask of Light (VL Online-11/03) is actually a prequel to the latter's story about the Toa, robotic guardians of the Matoran tribe on the island of Mata Nui. Legends of Metru Nui shows us how the Toa came to be chosen from the pool of Matoran youth in the great city of Metru Nui and, though physically transformed, were hardly prepared for their increased size and superheroic powers. In short order, the Toa--who babble and bicker like agitated adolescents--have to master their new gifts, impress their leader, and prepare to protect their home. Sprawling adventure, nonstop action, and real emotional complexity make this computer-generated universe, inspired by Lego's line of collectible Bionicle robots, a continually viable source for endless story possibilities. DVD extras include a "making-of" featurette, Q&A with the creative team, and character profiles. Recommended. Aud: P. (T. Keogh)
