Written and drawn by Korean artists In-Wan Youn and Kyung-Il Yang, Blade of the Phantom Master: Shin Angyo Onshi takes place in the war-ravaged land of Jushin, where before the empire collapsed a police squad known as the Amen Osa kept law and order. In the current state of chaos, one Amen Osa named Munsu tries to maintain some degree of sanity and stability. Munsu sets out to help a veterinarian named Monlyon, whose girlfriend has been enslaved by an oppressive ruler, and winds up meeting a mysterious girl named Sando (which surprises Munsu, since the name “Sando” refers to bodyguards for the Amen Osa). Just why the police need their own protection is never explained in this admittedly nice-looking feature-length anime that follows the meandering pair over the course of a confusing tale that draws on every imaginable post-apocalyptic adventure stereotype. Presented on a dual-language disc, rated TV-MA, DVD extras include a “making-of” featurette and interviews with the Japanese cast. Not a necessary purchase. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
