While scoring high-profile credits as a screenwriter (including Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back), Lawrence Kasdan made his 1981 directorial debut with this steamy, contemporary classic filmed in the tradition of Double Indemnity and other film noir classics from the 1940s. In one of his most memorable roles, William Hurt plays Florida lawyer Ned Racine, who is unwittingly drawn into a web of deceit spun by Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner, in her screen debut), a married socialite plotting to kill her husband with Ned's assistance. Kasdan's dialogue is a hoot (sometimes bordering on satire), while John Barry's score is a perfect complement to the perspiration-soaked chemistry between Hurt and Turner, whose love scenes initially caused quite a stir. Ted Danson and Mickey Rourke also shine in memorable supporting roles. Presented with a fine transfer, Blu-ray extras include three behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and vintage interviews with Hurt and Turner. An excellent addition to any budding Blu-ray collection, this is highly recommended. (J. Shannon)
