Meg, a brash but meek runaway, is fighting crime with Jo, a ruthless, unflappable killing machine with a soft spot for her partner. The pair are part of a mecha-powered Tokyo vigilante group committed to defending the weak and shooting a whole lot of things. In this OVA (original video animation) addendum to the popular anime series, the gals are compelled to track down and wipe out a psychotic killer with a slasher robot who has wounded one of their adopted family. Anime and action movie clichés abound, including the whiny and apparently spineless Meg being captured and used as bait to trap the powerful Jo, the cry for payback justifying bloody violence to people and mecha, numerous scenes of jiggle and skimpy outfits, and the titillating implication that Meg and Jo are more than friends. The animation is solid (particularly the fight scenes), but the combination of sexualized slasher violence with nipple-accentuating clothing eventually veers from funny to unsettling, pushing the TV-14 rating. None of this is completely out of place in this fan-service-driven sci-fi aimed at teenage boys, but this overpriced single episode lacks the engaging fun of the original series. Presented on a dual-language disc, DVD extras include 90 minutes worth of recaps of the earlier episodes and a brief preview of a second season that never happened. Very optional. Aud: P. (R. Brenner)
