There's a reason why dentists hardly appear in movies, let alone romantic dramas. No one wants to see close-ups of teeth drilling or hear the spit-sucking sounds of suction. Yet Angela Pope's Captives breaks the unspoken rule and includes both. Julia Ormond plays a divorced prison dentist who falls in love with an inmate (Tim Roth), even though he murdered his wife. Since their love is a secret, they are reduced to having sex on the floor of a toilet stall and fondling each other during routine check-ups. Ormond and Roth try to make the best of this disenchanting love story, but they can't overcome the ridiculous scenarios. The only captive here is the viewer. Not recommended. (L. Russo)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
