Danny, a star-struck cat from Kokomo, Indiana, dreams of being "a song and dance cat...the cat to see." But in 1930's Hollywood, animals are relegated to supporting roles. "Cats just say 'meow'," he's told. Danny's efforts to step into the spotlight are further hampered by reigning child star Darla Dimple, who, offscreen, is an animal-hating terror. This ambitious animated musical gives it the old "let's put on a show" try, but doesn't quite land on its feet. The bland-voiced cast (Scott Bakula, Jasmine Guy, George Kennedy) is ill-served by unmemorable songs by Randy Newman (these must be the tunes that Disney rejected). The film is dedicated to Gene Kelly who reportedly served as a choreography consultant. Best to show children Singin' in the Rain instead. Not recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
