Chairman of the Board: Work Sucks!

No doubt targeted toward 14-year-old boys, Chairman of the Board is colorful, goofy, and brimming with the adolescent humor that has made college comedy circuit darling Carrot Top famous. Here, the orange-haired boy wonder plays Edison, a down and out gadget inventor on the verge of being evicted by his landlady (played by high-pitched whiner Estelle Parsons of Seinfeld). When a fellow inventor and corporate bigwig named Armand McMillan (Jack Warden) dies suddenly and leaves his Fortune 500 company to Edison, everyone--especially Armand's greedy nephew Bradford--is stunned. In his new position, wacky Edison must contend with embittered Bradford undermining his every move as chairman of the board. Original, eh? The humor is tiresome, the dialogue both insipid and relentlessly loud, and Courtney Thorne-Smith and Raquel Welch--who each have bland supporting roles--must have hit all-time professional lows here. As Carrot Top says, "Work sucks!" (and so does this movie). (A. Glover)
