A poignant tale that celebrates the endurance of love, Changing Times reunites Gerard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve, here appearing in their seventh film together (and the first since 1980's The Last Metro). He plays middle-aged engineer Antoine Lavau, newly arrived in Tangiers to oversee construction of a major media center, a job that gives him an opportunity to renew his relationship with his first flame Cecile (Deneuve), whom he has loved for 30 years. She's married to Natan (Gilbert Melki), a Moroccan doctor, and resists Antoine's advances, but a tragedy brings them together…although who knows for how long? Director Andre Techine, no stranger to such highly emotional material, deserves much credit for keeping his story and actors relatively low-key—at several points in the narrative, Changing Times could have slid into melodrama, but never does. Passionate and energetic, Techine's film is a delight from beginning to end. Highly recommended. (E. Hulse)
