Comics and filmmakers Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have been entertaining audiences for over four decades now, mostly with drug-oriented material that titillated and convulsed listeners in a more straight-laced era. This plot-less "animated movie" actually takes famous C&C audio tracks from their bestselling albums and mates the cuts to line-art cartoons by siblings Branden and Eric Chambers (and others). Bits include "Let's Make a Dope Deal" and "Dave's Not Here," plus running appearances by archetypal doper pals Pedro and Man (and Buster the Body Crab). Marijuana being a rather, um, evergreen topic, many of the jokes still hold up, even in the post-Vietnam War era, but the simple truth here is that the recordings work best in the theater of the mind (preferably stoned). Only near the end in sequences featuring blazing-eyed Catholic-school nun Sister Mary Elephant do the imagery and audio combine to create a good buzz. The closing credits emphasize that nearly all of the voices heard here are by Marin or Chong, underrated masters of mimicry and characterization. Nostalgic boomers will be the main audience for this so-so film. A strong optional purchase. (C. Cassady)
