This one is truly a grim fairy tale. Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the creators of Delicatessen, have cooked up another feast for the senses. The story is near incomprehensible (something about a mad scientist bent on stealing the dreams of children), but like Terry Gilliam, these two make ceaselessly inventive films that are exhilaratingly original. I'm still haunted by the unsettling prologue in which a young boy finds himself in a room in which a fireplace keeps dispensing Santa Clauses.... Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
