The premise of writer-director Debbie Isitt's British mockumentary—accentuated with lots of direct-to-camera explanations and ersatz “caught on the fly” footage—finds Confetti magazine hosting a competition among three engaged couples to create the most original matrimonial ceremony with the assistance of two flamboyantly gay wedding planners. One couple is inspired by old Hollywood musicals (despite the fact that she's quite tone-deaf), the second opts for a tennis motif, and the third are “naturalists” who plan to marry in the buff. Needless to say, complications arise from pushy relatives, petty jealousies, and the magazine's commercial considerations. Still, all three ceremonies take place, each an elaborate, fault-free, theatrical production—which is absurd, given the fact that each is in turmoil up until the very last moment. Largely improvised, Confetti generates some mild chuckles but not many big laughs, before falling apart in the finale. Optional. [Note: DVD extras include 70 minutes of “Confetti Keeps Falling: More Tears and Tantrums” bonus footage, alternate endings (8 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a solid extras package for a disappointing comedy.] (F. Swietek)
