The second recent effort based on Chekov's Uncle Vanya (the first was Vanya on 42nd St [VL-7/95]), this slightly more entertaining version set in turn-of-the-century Australia features Greta Scacchi as the comely young wife of a pompous critic who attracts the attention of a semi-alcoholic pacifist country doctor and the critic's struggling brother-in-law, poor Uncle Jack (a really delightful performance by John Hargreaves). An earthy, rousingly comic adaptation that nicely captures the spirit of Chekov's original. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
