The box for this film fest fave suggests that it's "in the tradition of My Life as a Dog," and while this Norwegian coming-of-age tale is considerably bleaker than the 1985 Lasse Hallström classic, it marks an impressive feature debut for screenwriter-director Marius Holst. Single-digit Martin Dahl Garfalk gives a strong performance in the lead role of Otto, "the smallest boy on the soccer team" who discovers truth, courage and a girl while on summer break. A little gem, which Vanguard Films has buffed to a sparkle. Recommended. (S. C. Sickles)
