A Taming of the Shrew-inspired romantic comedy about three buddies who are so in love with three sisters that they bribe a local lothario (LL Cool J) to romance the girls' foxy but single, meddling hellcat of an older sibling (Gabrielle Union), Deliver Us From Eva is thick with unfulfilled promise. Unfortunately, instead of well-developed characters, we're given empty caricatures of bossy black women and whipped black men. And, in place of smart comedy, the film serves up a silly, sitcom-like kidnapping plot that ultimately begets the picture's wholly contrived, tiresome, misogynistic, so-called happy-ending in which the women catch their men in a huge, cruel, stupid lie that proves they have no respect, but forgive them anyway. Ain't that romantic? Appealing chemistry and stinging banter between Union and LL Cool J keep this from being a total disaster, but this is hardly a necessary purchase. [Note: Available in widescreen or full screen versions, DVD extras include audio commentary by director Gary Hardwick, an 11-minute “Delivering Eva” behind-the-scenes featurette, nine-minutes of deleted scenes, the music videos “Paradise” by costar LL Cool J and “This Very Moment” by K-Ci and Jojo, and a soundtrack spot. Bottom line: a standard extras package for a run of the mill romantic comedy.] (R. Blackwelder)
