Writers/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the lamebrains whose ineffectual Naked Gun-type comedies have included the desperately unfunny Date Movie, Epic Movie, and Meet the Spartans, assault viewers' senses yet again with this pitifully inept spoof of Cloverfield. When a mysterious calamity threatens mankind, a small group of friends—including Will (Matt Lanter), Calvin (G. Thang), Juney (Crista Flanagan), and Lisa (Kim Kardashian)—link up with an Enchanted Princess (Nicole Parker) in an effort to rescue Will's trapped girlfriend Amy (Vanessa Minnillo) before they flee the city. Friedberg and Seltzer reference innumerable recent movies and TV shows, while several celebrity lookalikes are clumsily inserted into dreary skits. The acting here ranges from barely competent to embarrassingly awful, making notorious celebutard Kardashian seem almost professional in her undemanding role. The most depressing aspect of these Friedberg-Seltzer would-be parodies is that the filmmakers don't know how or when to cut their losses, since the lame skits have a tendency to drag on and on. Truth be told, even if the aptly named Disaster Movie had been made by amateurs in five-minute chunks posted on YouTube, it couldn't have been worse. Not recommended. [Note: DVD extras include audio commentary from the cast and crew, eight behind-the-scenes featurettes (including “Girl Fight,” “Sitting Down with a Stand-Up,” “G-Thang's Tour,” “Straight from the Ladies,” “Who's Spoofing Who,” and “This is How We Do It”) and the sing-alongs “High School Musical” and “I'm F**king Matt Damon” (46 min. total), and trailers. Bottom line: a decent extras package for a D.O.A. comedy.] (E. Hulse)
