Irish actress Elaine Cassidy (Felicia's Journey) has porcelain skin, unnervingly black eyes, and an expression of perpetual tremulous hopefulness. Her visage flits back and forth between mousy and beautiful in Kirsten Sheridan's bleak, but energetic debut Disco Pigs. Elaine Cassidy and Cillian Murphy play Runt and Pig, two misfits born on the same day, raised next door to each other, and absolutely inseparable. But with the approaching milestone of their 17th birthday, Runt begins to see possibilities in the outside world, while Pig's feelings for his platonic best (girl)friend move from devotion to obsession. Based on a stage play by Enda Walsh, Disco Pigs gradually heads toward a violent cataclysm as the protagonists near separation, with the only real question being whether Runt and Pig will inflict it on the world or each other. Sporting a non-linear structure of flashbacks and fantasy moments, well-cast actors, and a solid directorial hand, this somewhat predictable but still disturbingly parasitic character study is a strong optional purchase.
