Based on the (mostly) true story of Domino Harvey (Keira Knightly, in a tour de force performance), a poor little rich girl who, seeking to escape Beverly Hills and the rough life of a fashion model, turned to—no kidding—bounty hunting for adventure and excitement, director Tony Scott's Domino is a hyperkinetic film that makes you understand why a tiny, delicate, bored little china doll like Domino would rebel against the shackles of privilege. Aggressively antisocial and brutally funny, this is Scott's masterpiece, at least to date, a wild film with a twisty, sneaky plot—revolving around a casino heist gone wrong, pissed-off mobsters, a sassy black woman who works at the DMV, and a sick baby—and relentless, ultra-violent action. Throughout, Knightly proves her kinship with Domino (who died of a drug overdose in June 2005), daring the viewer to categorize her as just another pretty face. Recommended. [Note: Available in either widescreen or full screen versions, DVD extras include audio commentary by director Tony Scott and writer Richard Kelly, an alternate audio track with script notes and story development meetings (with Scott, Kelly, executive producer Zach Schiff-Abrams, and costar Tom Waits), the 21-minute featurette “I Am a Bounty Hunter” on the life of Domino Harvey (with an optional alternate audio track featuring Kelly interviewing the late Harvey), “Bounty Hunting on Acid: Tony Scott's Visual Style” (11 min.), seven deleted and alternate scenes with optional commentary (8 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a substantive extras package for a wild ride of a film.] (M. Johanson)
