For several years, Ving Rhames has been stealing scenes from the likes of Bruce Willis (Pulp Fiction), Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds (Striptease) and Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible). As the man who would be (Don) King, he comes into his own with a knockout performance that earned him a Golden Globe (which he now famously turned over to fellow-nominee Jack Lemmon). In this bio-pic, commensurately outrageous as its flamboyant subject, the controversial and indefatigable King gives us a ringside seat for scenes from his tumultuous career, from managing mob-run music clubs in Cleveland to managing Mike Tyson. Highly recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
