A capricious, celebratory fable about the sexes from the marvelously idiosyncratic director Robert Altman, Dr. T & the Women stars Richard Gere as a genteel Dallas gynecologist whose life is a befuddling storm of estrogen. His waiting room is a circus of tacky air-kissing aristocrats; his wife (Farrah Fawcett) is a borderline basket case; one daughter (Kate Hudson) is obsessing over her wedding, while the other (Tara Reid) might be trying to ruin it; and his drunken divorcee sister-in-law (Laura Dern) has just moved in with her three spoiled, hyperactive little girls. So, when Dr. T meets the new golf pro at his country club--a fiercely independent woman played by Helen Hunt, who seems not to need him for anything--he becomes enthralled, and destined for adulterous heartbreak. The ensemble cast is superb (especially the unaffected Hunt as his Everywoman enigma), but Gere stands out with a surprisingly internalized performance as a man in awe of women and totally at a loss when it comes to understanding them. Highly recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
