A twentysomething gay couple--Ryan, a coffeehouse waiter/aspiring screenwriter, and web designer Joel--break up just before their third-year anniversary after Ryan bonds with a rather gawky college student named Leo with whom he shares a few passionate interests. Or do they break up? Screenwriter and director Quentin Lee posits a Sliding Doors-like what-if scenario with not two but three possible outcomes, including one where Leo actually hooks up with Joel. Although some of the dialogue sounds too film-schoolish (“I was so frazzled and full of angst when I met you”), the completely natural delivery by mostly unknown but gifted actors (Reggie Lee, Greyson Dayne, and Desi del Valle) makes it sound convincing, while the close-in handheld camerawork affords an unusual degree of intimacy with these overly self-involved but otherwise realistic characters. A strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
