A sweet and gentle movie about moms and sons and relationships and food (lots of food), filmmaker David Au's pleasant comedy-drama is anchored by a lovely performance from Sharon Omi as Emma, who is newly separated from her bored husband and living with her son, Elliot (Teddy Chen Culver), a closeted gay man running a failing restaurant. While Emma sorts out her new reality—more or less with the help of scatterbrained friend Maureen (Nicole Sullivan)—Elliot confronts both his business problems and tricky love life, which is all the more complicated now due to Emma's homophobia. Will love and generosity of spirit prevail? Featuring an enlightening conversation with George Takei (playing himself), as well as loads of scrumptious-looking dishes, this engaging film is recommended. (T. Keogh)
