Algerian-born, French-based documentary filmmaker Djamila Sahraoui makes a powerful impression with her narrative feature debut. Set during the destructive chaos of Algeria's civil war during the 1990s, the film focuses on a doctor named Amel (Rachida Brakni), whose husband—a prominent journalist—suddenly vanishes. Whether he has been kidnapped by the government or militant terrorists is unclear. Amel is unable to find any conclusive evidence on her own, but aid arrives in the unlikely form of a nurse named Khadidja (Fettouma Bouamari), an older woman who was part of the Algerian struggle for independence against the French in the 1950s. Khadidja insists on joining Amel—despite their significant differences in background, education, politics, and personalities—and the pair team up to uncover the fate of Amel's husband in a remote mountainous area of Algeria. Enough! features thorny subject matter (by North African standards, at least) relating to gender, generation gaps, and theologically-fueled violence in the midst of the Arab world, yet the film is remarkably free of the strident tone that often mars political films, while still offering a compelling critique of a culture that appears to thrive on internecine chaos. Highly recommended. (P. Hall)
