The real Dorothy Day was a courageous woman and unwed mother, who struggled with her believe in God, fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, organized the Catholic Worker magazine, and was a social activist who dedicated her life to practicing what so many of us only preach. Her story ought to be told, but this unfortunately isn't the vehicle. What could have been an inspiring film about a religious leader who devoted her life to helping others, spends a lot of time polishing halos and testing angel wings. Set in the early 1930's, this saint-of-the-week movie (probably more suited to Wednesday night network TV), follows Day (Moira Kelly) as a plucky free spirit who falls in love with a cad, is jilted into spiritual awakening, and spends the rest of the movie obsessed with down-on-their-luck-homeless folk. Even with its flaws, however, the film may inspire patrons to find out the real scoop on this noble woman. A strong optional purchase. (N. Plympton)
