When a Rembrandt is stolen from a seemingly impenetrable New York high rise, an insurance inspector (the ravishing Catherine Zeta-Jones) convinces her skeptical bosses that it is the work of Robert "Mac" MacDouglas (Sean Connery), the world's greatest art thief...and that she can capture him. Let the game of cat-and-mouse begin. Navigating this heist thriller's labyrinthine twists and turns, shifting alliances and thwarted agendas is not nearly as tricky as the tentative May-December (that's December of next year) romance that blossoms between Zeta-Jones and Connery. Like her character, Zeta-Jones (who so seductively crossed swords with Antonio Banderas in Mask of Zorro) is in way over her head here and not believable for a second, but the scene in which she writhes and undulates over and under a crisscross of security system laser beams gives the film a Viagra-like lift. Connery, the ageless embodiment of virility onscreen, carries the day in a role, which--playing up to his considerable charm, charisma and cool--may be the closest we come to seeing him once again portray James Bond. An optional purchase. (K. Lee Benson)
