While it's refreshing to see sexual fantasies created by women, this collection of four shorts faces the same problems that plague porn films. The stories aren't compelling and the characters aren't developed. Lizzie Borden's "Let's Talk About Sex" involves a phone sex operator who dominates a caller. Monika Treut's "Taboo Parlor" follows a lesbian couple who bring home a man and have their way with him. Ana Maria Magalhäes' "Final Call" explores the passionate relationship between a photographer and a teacher who meet on a train. The last and best short, "Wonton Soup," is directed by Clara Law (Temptation of a Monk), and delves into the funny and sad reunion of college lovers torn apart by cultural differences. As a collection, Erotique has beautifully sensual moments as well as laughably bad ones. Just like watching porn, you'll have to fast forward to get to the good parts. Optional. (L. Russo)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
