Who would have thought that Marky Mark could actually act? As it happens, Wahlberg plays a charming psychopath who terrorizes his former girlfriend (Reese Witherspoon) and her family. Director James Foley weaves some genuine suspense into this tale of first love gone wrong. The performances, including William Petersen's overprotective father, are effective, if not groundbreaking, though the love scenes between Wahlberg and Witherspoon go down like cough syrup. Fear is a standard thriller, not great filmmaking but not unwatchable. Optional. (L. Russo)
