Thief? Lover? Liar? Male Prostitute? Murderer? Talk show host? You may be surprised to find out that the undeniably legendary Errol Flynn was all of these, as least according to this Vanguard Films bio-pic. (okay, we exaggerated the talk show host part). The film follows the early part of Flynn's storybook life, from his promising start as the son of a famous Australian biologist, through his ill-fated expeditions to find gold in the jungles of New Guinea, right up to his very first film appearance. Less a biography than a series of unrelated and incredulous adventures, this low-budget, direct to video film is certainly ambitious--if little else. L.A. Confidential's Guy Pearce makes a handsome and dashing Flynn, and he does his best with the role, but the film's banal script, wan (at best) supporting cast and weak tech credits betray his efforts. Despite the remarkable exploits of its protagonist, Flynn is an unremarkable film. Not recommended. (S. C. Sickles)
