How would you like to have someone pour the contents of their slop bucket down your chimney every night? You probably wouldn't and neither does the wee little man in the Welsh tale "Slops," told here by Kathi Lightstone. In "Slops," an elderly husband's after-dinner duty is to take the very heavy slop bucket to the edge of his fence and heave it over the side--until he learns one day that the potato, carrot and onion peelings, along with the dirty dishwater, are going directly down a wee little man's chimney. How the "neighbors" resolve their conflict makes for an entertaining and instructive story. In addition to "Slops," the video also includes a Zimbabwean tale told by Laura Chiorah-dye called "A Blind Man Catches a Bird," which underscores the importance of honesty in good relations, and "The War Between the Sandpipers and the Whales," a conflict resolution parable from the Marshall Islands, told by Tricia Folan. Although the presentations are nicely filmed, they do not compare to the superior work done by James Burgess in the first FolkTales of Peace (VL-7/96) nor in his follow-up, FolkTales of Conflict and Peace (VL-3/98).
