Hollywood's favorite himbo is back, doing what he does best: taking on an undemanding role and finding excuses to show off his buff bod. Once upon a time, Matthew McConaughey was touted as an up-and-coming actor, but he has since squandered his meager talents in fluffy romantic comedies and empty-headed action/adventure flicks. Director Andy Tennant's Fool's Gold, which re-teams McConaughey with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days costar Kate Hudson, takes place in the Caribbean, where irresponsible salvage diver Finn (McConaughey) stumbles across a clue to the legendary, long-lost treasure known as the Queen's Dowry. Finn's initial search for this fortune in gold and jewels costs him his marriage to Tess (Hudson), now working on the yacht of a kindly billionaire (Donald Sutherland) who Finn persuades to bankroll his continuing treasure hunt after escaping—narrowly—from a ruthless gangsta rapper (Kevin Hart) to whom Finn is indebted. Naturally, Finn and Tess renew their relationship, and the billionaire bonds with his airhead daughter (Alexis Dziena, channeling Paris Hilton), but at no point does the witless script demand anything beyond the perfunctory from its performers. Anyone hoping to watch Fool's Gold with the expectation of seeing a good movie will be embarking on a fool's errand. Not recommended. [Note: Available in either widescreen, full screen, or Blu-ray versions, DVD/Blu-ray extras include a five-minute “Flirting with Adventure” featurette on the chemistry between stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, a three-minute gag reel, and trailers. Bottom line: a small extras package for a forgettable film.] (E. Hulse)
