This anthology of four lesbian short films has two worth seeing. Set in a station-wagon, Barbara Heller's "Little Women in Transit" is a slice-of-life film that explores the backseat bickering of three young sisters, and realistically reveals how children use the term "lesbian" as an insult. Mitch McCabe's "Playing the Part" wonderfully documents the filmmaker's life, as she tries and tries to inform her socialite parents she's a lesbian. The other two films, Barbara Rose Michels' "Watching Her Sleep" and Ela Troyano's "Carmelita Tropicana," lessen Girlfriends' impact. The first is a trite fantasy set in a supermarket; the other, an obnoxious musical comedy about four women in jail. Optional. (L. Russo)
