File this one under "anything goes." As raucously ribald drag-queen comedies go, Girls Will Be Girls has all the makings of a cult classic, including garish sets and costumes, day-glow lighting, ultra-low-budget production values, and enough gross-out humor to make Howard Stern look tame by comparison. As a raunchy exposé of the wretched underbelly of Hollywood and the dreadful fate of showbiz has-beens and wannabes, it's pretty much right on the money with its story (such as it is) about a crass, alcoholic washout named Evie (Jack Plotnick)--a faded sorta-star who shares her pastel-hued home with wannabe actresses Varla (Jeffery Roberson) and Coco (Clinton Leupp). Jealousies erupt and skeletons leap out of Evie's closet when Varla gets a taste of success, and trashy one-liners are delivered with shameless abandon. Lending new meaning to the phrase "nothing is sacred," this is the kind of movie that John Waters would hail (with some justification) as a kitschy masterpiece. Hardly for all (or even most) tastes, this is still a strong optional purchase. [Note: DVD extras include a delightfully bawdy cast-and-director commentary. Bottom line: a small but fun extras package for a small outrageous film.] (J. Shannon)
