In this tale of urban angst and flight, a young New Yorker relocates to L.A. after his friends are murdered and he's not. Sadly and predictably, he finds that he can run, but he sure can't hide. Without identification, references or any other societal niceties, he can't even get a crappy subsistence job. Evocative black and white sequences, jump cuts and edgy music abound as Nathan drifts into shoplifting, breaking and entering, and cocaine delivery--the only employment options available. Eventually the conflicted character of Nathan redeems himself somewhat, but there's still more contrivance than is seemly, and the ending is rather jumbled. A product for and by angst-ridden twentysomethings (director Darren Doane is 25 and a music vid veteran), this video features a notable soundtrack (Blink 182, Down by Law, Voodoo Glow Skulls) and is even suitable for young adult collections not averse to a modicum (I swear, it's a modicum) of nasty language and a little stylized violence--all well within the context of the story. Optional. (M. Tribby)
