Though surely inspired by her, this is not the Carole King story (it's more like a tapestry). In her first starring role, Illeana Douglas (To Die For, Cape Fear) hits all the right notes as Edna Buxton, an aspiring singer-songwriter. Installed in New York's legendary Brill Building, she writes hit songs for others under the name of Denise Waverly. However, her private life, with such heels as hack songwriter Eric Stoltz and married man Bruce Davison, is less than harmonious. Matt Dillon gives off good vibrations as a Brian Wilson type. Optional. (K. Lee Benson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
