A perceptive story of self-discovery, Guinevere features the supremely natural Sarah Polley (Go, The Sweet Hereafter) as an unmolded, insecure, 20-year-old beauty whose complex, turbulent, sexual and artistic apprentice with a much older man (Stephen Rea) unleashes her creative confidence, long suppressed by her dysfunctional, passionless family. Written and directed by Audrey Wells (The Truth About Cats & Dogs), this is an intelligent and honest exploration of an untraditional romance that may not have any future, but nonetheless helps the heroine blossom. Frank, ardent and boasting brilliant performances, most notably from Jean Smart as Polley's bitter, resentful mother, this is recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
