This ensemble comedy, co-executive-produced by Magic Johnson, stars Mo'Nique as Peaches, a brassy, motormouth hair stylist dodging IRS agents seeking $50,000 in back taxes. Swallowing her pride, Peaches turns to her sister Angela (Kellita Smith), who received a sizable inheritance (of which Peaches got no part) and opened an upscale salon in Los Angeles. Angela reluctantly adds Peaches to her staff, and the cheeky, tell-it-like-it-is gal turns out to be the most talented and in-demand stylist in the place. The question is: can Peaches talk Angela into entering the shop in a vulgar, if lucrative, hair show competition? Sporadically funny and occasionally audacious, director Leslie Smalls' Hair Show is reminiscent of such workplace comedies as Barbershop and Empire Records. Optional. [Note: DVD extras include four minutes of deleted scenes and trailers. Bottom line: a paltry extras package for a so-so film.] (T. Keogh)
