This off-kilter romantic dramedy stars an amusingly harried Marisa Tomei as Ruby Weaver, a romantically co-dependent Manhattanite trying to curb her pathological urge to latch on to men who are major emotional fixer-uppers. With the help of her intrusive therapist (the wonderfully wry Holland Taylor), she thinks she's getting better--then she falls in love with Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio), a sweetly awkward oddball who claims to be (and perhaps really is) from the distant future. Writer-director Brad Anderson (Next Stop Wonderland, Session 9) understands the inner sweetness and the outer cynicism of his amour-impaired heroine, and D'Onofrio lends a strange magnetism to Sam, a whacko that any sensible woman would run away from as fast as she could. Granted, the sci-fi-like elements become distractingly and annoyingly implausible, but the picture's sense of humor and good-natured warmth makes its shortcomings easier to forgive. A strong optional purchase. (R. Blackwelder)
