A ridiculous yarn about two escaped cons posing as gay beauty pageant directors while they hole up in a small town, most of the comedy in Happy, Texas is barely above sketch caliber, but the movie's fantastic cast takes it to another level. Steve Zahn (Out of Sight), as another affable dunce with a 5th grade education, and Jeremy Northam (An Ideal Husband), as the charming brains of the operation, swipe an RV that belongs to the real twinkle-toed pageant kings and get stuck putting on a kiddie talent show in order to lay low. Rounding out the cast is William H. Macy as the town's just uncloseted sheriff, and Illeana Douglas and Ally Walker as love interests once the boys "straighten" things out. A strong optional purchase. (R. Blackwelder)
