Slowly paced but ultimately satisfying, this Oscar-nominated Welsh biopic is based on the true story of Hedd Wynn, the bardic name of poet Ellis Evans. Set during WWI, the film follows Evans' (Huw Garmon) romantic aspirations, both in rhyme and in the flesh, as he woos a local village girl and enters poems in national competition. Although initially opposing the war, Evans is eventually drawn in and sent to the front lines. A tragically ironic tale, Hedd Wyn will appeal to foreign film buffs, and is recommended. (R. Pitman)
