Alan Smithee is the worst director in the world--and he's not even a person. The fictitious name is often used by Hollywood directors who are ashamed of their final product. So it's a bad sign that Hellraiser: Bloodline has the Smithee stamp of disapproval. The last installment of the Clive Barker-penned series, the film follows a scientist (Bruce Ramsay) who must fight his doomed heritage and the devil's gatekeeper, Pinhead (Doug Bradley), in order to save the universe from the clutches of hell. The cheeseball effects, including a dog/beast that resembles a slab of raw meat, are more gross than scary. Moreover, the suspense is undermined by the fact that we're told the fate of the characters before we're shown it. Whoever he/she is, Smithee has taken the life right out of Bloodline. (L. Russo)
